Shopping in Reykjavik

Laugavegur is the main shopping street in the downtown area. In this popular shopping area of Reykjavik visitors find a large number of shops and craft studios, but it's not exactly the cheapest area to go shopping in Reykjavik. Instead, Skólavördustígur (the street leading from Laugavegur to the Hallgrímskirkja church) has turned into a very hot shopping area. Going to the Mall in Reykjavik: The Kringlan shopping mall in the new city center of Reykjavik, is a shopping hub of social activity. Get some souvenirs from Íslandia, the popular store with Icelandic souvenirs. The famous lopapeysa (Icelandic sweater) are also great to bring home - they can be bought in every bigger store in Reykjavik. Taxfree Shopping A refund of local Value-Added Tax is available to visitors in Iceland. The refund will result in a reduction of up to 15% of the retail price, provided departure from Iceland is within 3 months after the purchase is made. The purchase amount must be no less than ISK 4,000 (VAT included) per sales receipt, and all goods (except woollens) need to be shown at customs if the total sales amount is more than ISK 40,000.

A great location to stay at when visiting Reykjavik is the Metropolitan Hotel, which is just 2 minutes away from the center of Reykjavik.
